How to set up a home wind turbine
A home wind turbine is no longer an unfamiliar idea. Alternative sources of electricity are being talked about and debated more and more. They have many staunch supporters and just as many opponents. The same applies to wind turbines. Here, however, we will not look at large wind farms, only at small turbines for home use.
The wind knows
Wind is one of the renewable sources of energy and has been used to power all kinds of equipment since ancient times. After all, in many villages where natural conditions allowed, windmills worked for many years. Today, however, they are often converted into holiday homes or restored as technical monuments. Time has simply blown away the old romance of windmills. Even so, wind energy has made a comeback in recent years as a promising renewable source that does not pollute the environment in any way during operation and does not contribute to CO2 production, and therefore not to global warming either.
A home wind turbine is not the main option on offer.

A small home power plant
As we have already mentioned, wind turbines are not yet very common in households. Unfortunately, this is due to the nature and availability of the technology needed. While installing solar panels, to simplify a little, is just a matter of placing and connecting the individual components, a home wind turbine usually requires a mast to be built and firmly anchored to carry the turbine.
So how does a wind turbine actually work? It uses a mechanical principle: the wind turns a rotor, which drives an electricity generator either directly or through a gearbox. And where there are mechanical parts, there will inevitably be possible breakdowns, regular maintenance and noise. With a small wind turbine, you should definitely be prepared for this.
There are also far fewer suppliers and models available than there are for solar panels. In Europe you can already buy a solar power system at a retail chain such as IKEA, for example, and in the Czech Republic dozens to hundreds of companies supply and install them for households, from small teams to large energy companies. The choice of wind turbines is smaller. That does not mean, however, that you will not find a suitable, good-quality product or supplier in the Czech Republic.
What are the key takeaways?
- fewer suppliers of wind turbines than of solar panels
- more demanding site conditions
- more demanding maintenance
- greater fluctuations in supply
- more complex connection
All of this means that solar power has currently pulled well ahead of wind power for small consumers.
How much electricity does a small wind turbine produce?
Wind turbines for home use are usually divided into:
- small sources
- micro sources
Small wind sources are turbines with an output of up to 60 kW. Micro sources are small wind turbines with an output of up to 2.5 kW and a rotor diameter of up to about 2.5 metres. As a very rough guide, a small wind turbine with an output of 750 W can be expected to produce about 1 to 2 MWh of electricity a year.
Does a home wind turbine pay off?
Can you meet all the necessary requirements? Then you will want to know whether buying such a turbine is worth it at all. So focus on the following factors:
- the purchase cost of the wind turbine
- how suitable its location is, in other words the actual output of the turbine mentioned above
- weather fluctuations during the period when you will use the turbine most
- the value of the energy the wind turbine saves you, or that you sell
As a rule, if you meet all the conditions needed for the turbine to run smoothly, an investment of around 30,000 CZK (about 1,400 USD) in a turbine can pay for itself in just three years of operation.
