Would you like a pleasantly warm home without spending a fortune on heating? In that case, you need a good-quality thermostat that regulates and maintains a constant temperature in the room. If you are choosy, you can look around at several types of thermostats, such as wireless or digital ones.

The main job of a thermostat

The job of a thermostat is to keep your home at the temperature you want. Setting the right temperature is much simpler and quicker than with thermostatic radiator valves. The room heating is then switched on and off based on the current temperature. This information is passed on to the boiler.

Digital or wireless thermostat?

Digital or wireless?

When choosing a thermostat, take into account the heat source you have in your home. Put simply, the two need to work together. For example, new boilers can also be controlled by a more sophisticated thermostat, such as:

  • a wireless one
  • a digital one

In some cases, you need to choose a thermostat from specific manufacturers that meet certain specifications.

Wireless thermostat

It lets you set heating conditions and parameters precisely, for example by changing the reference room so that it best suits the needs of the house. You could, for instance, pick the coldest living room and place the thermostat there without having to run wires elsewhere. A wireless thermostat is therefore easy to move and is available wherever you need it at the time. Simpler wireless thermostat sets cost around 3,000 CZK (about 140 USD).

Digital thermostat

Modern digital thermostatic heads communicate with a central unit, which you use to set the temperatures you want. This lets you choose different temperature modes for day and night and fit them around your family’s routine. Examples include Honeywell or EvoHome digital thermostats. Digital heads come in two versions: either they communicate with a central unit, or they are standalone models that can replace standard heads. A set of four digital thermostatic heads and a receiver sells for around 13,000 CZK (about 600 USD). The advantages, however, are precise temperature control and energy savings.

Correct programming, in other words setting up the thermostat, is important for optimising consumption and keeping a comfortable indoor temperature. There are thermostats with manual temperature setting, and programmable thermostats that offer a wide choice of programmes. The thermostat can then be surface-mounted or flush-mounted.

  • Manual room thermostat: easy to operate. You set the temperature manually.
  • Programmable room thermostat: lets you create your own heating programme, for example lowering the temperature while you are at work. This helps you save more on energy costs.

When choosing a thermostat, you should also consider the temperature sensor. You can install it in the floor, for example, or in the room space. A combination of both is ideal, with the room sensor monitoring the air temperature and the floor sensor checking the floor temperature. It is also worth paying attention to how the sensor is installed. For example, it should not be placed near a heat source, because the measured temperature would be distorted.

And where will you put your thermostat?

Recommended places to install a thermostat:

  • The wall opposite the radiators
  • A clear wall without furniture
  • At an adult’s face height

Avoid, on the other hand:

  • Room corners
  • Near windows and doors
  • Near a radiator
  • Behind an open door
  • Behind curtains or net curtains
  • Right next to furniture
  • Near air conditioning or ventilation
  • On a shelf or above shelving
