Funeral floristry doesn’t have to be as depressing as you might think. You can make a grave decoration from almost anything. Sometimes a single ordinary fresh rose is enough, or you can put more effort into wreaths or a lavish funeral bouquet. You can, however, also try an arrangement made from artificial flowers.

Simply visiting the grave of someone close to you can be hard.

Such decorations, however, don’t have to cost a fortune, as you might think.

Materials used for artificial flowers

Plenty of people will tell you that nothing beats a real flower. They are partly right, because an artificial flower never has a scent. But when it comes to appearance, that is open to debate. It depends on what the artificial flower is made of. That is why you should choose from these materials:

Latex

Latex mixed with other materials produces a very realistic-looking flower that can even withstand the weather. What is more, a floral arrangement looks very tasteful and neat when made from this material.

Fabrics

Silk is often used to make artificial flowers. Like latex, it is durable, holds its colour and is of very high quality. You can then decorate such a flower with dried flowers too, and believe us, no one will notice. Only the scent is missing.

Plastic

The advantage is that such a flower is not very expensive. It looks nice, but it is easy to tell that it is made of plastic. On the other hand, it never wilts.

Which flowers to choose for graves

Artificial flowers chosen most often for cemeteries are those that are durable and beautiful. Some people insist on just one variety of their chosen flower. These include:

  • Lilies
  • Roses
  • Chrysanthemums
  • Gladioli
  • Hydrangea flowers

This is especially true of hydrangeas. Don’t hesitate to pick a fresh one from your garden or buy one. The great thing about hydrangeas is that they look amazing and attractive even when dried.

If you don’t like anything at the florist’s, you can make such a floral arrangement yourself. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild. After all, in Mexico it is customary to decorate graves with alcohol and colourful flowers. Here, you can create an arrangement in the shape of:

  • A cross
  • In a wicker basket
  • On stacked dry twigs
  • A wreath
  • A bouquet
  • A flowerpot

Our tips

Pumpkin with artificial flowers

A grave decoration made from artificial flowers can be tricky. You don’t want the place to look sad and kitschy. Your bumper pumpkin harvest could help. So how do you do it? It is as simple as carving a pumpkin for Halloween. Use a sharp knife to cut a hole around the stalk. Then scoop out all the flesh with a spoon. In the meantime, prepare some floral foam. Get enough artificial flowers from a florist’s or other shops. Don’t be afraid to use dried plants you saved in the autumn too, for example Chinese lantern, dried ears of wheat or other cereals, and various varieties of stonecrop. Carefully push them into the prepared foam. Here, too, there are no limits to your imagination, though less is often more.

Wreath made from artificial flowers

There is a certain symbolism here: the circle represents the link between life and death, infinity and eternity. That is why a wreath is such a common decoration on most graves. Again, it is enough to make a wreath with the help of dried herbs or plants. For herbs, use holy basil, for example, which has been added since the time of the pharaohs. Bay leaves are said to help make a connection with the spiritual world. If you have mint, it was used to wash the bodies of the deceased, and its aroma was meant to help the soul be reborn. Lemon balm won’t go to waste either, as it is believed to bring happiness in the afterlife. Nothing beats conifer sprigs or leafy branches, but if you have artificial flowers too, you can decorate the wreath with them as well.

When you walk through an illuminated cemetery, you will surely notice that artificial flowers decorate almost every grave.

However, if you want to draw inspiration from natural cemeteries, visit the Forest of Memories in Ďáblice cemetery. Unconventional burial with significant help from nature is becoming increasingly modern and sought after. On the other hand, foreign inspiration certainly includes the famous Casa Batlló, nicknamed the House of Bones. So why not take a look?
