Pastel colours in interiors, rooms and furniture
They are pleasant and modern. Pastel colours were once used mainly in children’s rooms. Soft blue or pink were popular, but times have changed and that idea would no longer go down well. Today, pastels are widely used and popular. They are especially popular in the shabby chic style.
What are pastel colours?
What do you actually picture when you hear pastel colours? They are soft shades of primary and secondary colours. What does that mean? You add white to your favourite colours, and this creates a shade that is simply priceless. If you enjoy botanical watercolour painting, you probably know what I mean. The resulting colours may remind you of a rainbow, candyfloss or even a meadow in bloom.
The most common pastel colours
The most popular colours definitely include:
- Dusty pink: you mix it from red and white. The result is a shade that can remind you of a sweet bonbon.
- Mint green: this is one of the most fashionable colours. If you use turquoise and white, you get a priceless interior. One advantage is that if you suffer from stress, this colour should help you feel better.
- Lilac: if you love lilac, you should definitely not miss this colour. It is most popular in bathrooms and bedrooms, but it depends on the shade.
- Apricot: apricot or coral is the ideal compromise between orange and pink. It is energetic and warm, but not too aggressive. It is easy to combine with other colours and natural materials.
Combining pastel colours
What can pastel colours be combined with? If your interior is rather neutral, airy or even timeless, these colours will look perfect in it. A big advantage of bright matt colours is that they make a space feel light, which helps create a positive mood. You can combine them easily and follow your personal preferences.
If the men of the house feel they want to break up an overly romantic feel, they can choose grey tones or darker floors and furniture, which will contrast with the pastel colours.
Interior decoration
Having a flat decorated in the colour style of the famous series Call the Midwife may be nice, but without accessories it will soon become boring. Try combining, for example, bed linen with various wicker baskets or interesting storage. Make your living room cosier with rugs and curtains in pleasant colours. In the kitchen, try various retro appliances that are not only functional but also look really stylish.
Decorative tiles
If you have the chance to renovate your kitchen or bathroom, consider using tiles in pastel colours. There is now a huge range of designs, finishes and shapes on the market. To highlight the individual tiles use white grout. This brings a sense of softness to a space that is usually associated with hard surfaces.
Wallpaper
If you cannot commit to a whole wall painted in a pastel colour, consider wallpaper or a mural. This way, hints and accents of pastel colours are combined with other colours and patterns. If you cannot find wallpaper that matches your design identity, another option may be a hand-painted mural or stencilled pattern. This way, you can design your own patterns and combine the colours you like. When creating your designs, make sure you keep to the correct scale!
If you are planning to repaint your walls, do not hesitate and make the most of it! There are several options. It is up to your preferences whether you choose just one wall or all of them.
