Do you know what to combine hydrangeas with?
To make your garden as beautiful as possible, you need the right combination of flowers in terms of colour, shape and size. The hydrangea, for example, is a flower that needs optimal conditions to grow. That is why you should also focus on plants that will allow it to grow.
The hydrangea is a shrub that flowers in various shades, which may be why it is so popular. It appeared in Europe as early as the 16th century, and from that time it was clear that it is very demanding. It likes a sunny spot, but it also needs shade during the day. It hates draughts, so do not put it anywhere that is often windy. If the soil in your garden is rather acidic, get products that will give it the nutrients it needs. Water it often as well. So which plants will support its growth?
Conifers
Their advantage is that they do not need much care. You also do not have to water them very often. So which conifer is suitable? Try dwarf pines, junipers or the popular thujas. Place them on the south side of the flower bed so that their shade falls on the flowers only around lunchtime. The ideal distance should be about 1.5 metres.
Peonies
The best-known species is the common peony. Peonies do not need direct sun, partial shade is enough, but they need plenty of water. Plant them in beds or under sparse trees and shrubs, ideally on the north or east side.
Spiraea
This is another beautiful plant that will delight you with its flowers in spring and summer. It goes very well with hydrangeas because it is taller, which means it will get enough sunlight. Together they will also create a bed you will be truly proud of.
Ornamental ferns
They grow both on rocks and in the wild, and they also suit your hydrangea. Try spleenwort, for example, which tends to be long-lived and easy to grow. Or the hart’s-tongue fern, whose firm, strong leaves look very decorative. In addition, it does not suffer from any diseases or pests.
Roses
Perhaps the most beautiful plant of all, and with an intoxicating scent too. The world of roses is very rich and growing them is not all that difficult either. You can get both shrub and climbing roses, and they go wonderfully with hydrangeas.
Astilbe
It likes the same conditions as the hydrangea, which is why the two get on so well. What is more, if you place it somewhere without too much sun, it will thrive. If you want it to flower, you will need to pay attention to the right soil acidity for it too.
Hosta
One of the more interesting plants that go well with hydrangeas is the hosta. It is a plant that prefers exactly the same growing conditions as the hydrangea, so it will have no problems alongside it. Hostas grow well in shade, so being shaded by the main plant will not be a problem for them.
What not to plant next to hydrangeas?
- Tall trees
- Onions
- Garlic
- Plants that need regular watering
- Black locust
Gardening is very popular, and it also helps you relax, so do not hesitate to make it one of your habits. Growing hydrangeas has its pitfalls, but you will get the hang of it over time.
