How to clean windows and avoid the 5 most common mistakes
Dirt and grime slowly but surely build up on windows, spoiling the view and blocking precious sunlight. Only one thing is worse: heavy streaks left behind by washing windows the wrong way.
To keep your view streak-free (and your light-loving houseplants happy), follow these expert cleaning tips from Carolyn Forte. With the right window cleaning products and techniques, your windows will look better than ever.
Washing windows on a sunny day
If you do this job in strong sunshine, the cleaner will dry on the hot glass before you can wipe it off, leaving streaks that are hard to remove. If the weather will not cooperate, start on the shady side of the house. This applies to both wooden and aluminium windows.
Spraying cleaner onto dirt and dust
Before you start, brush the dirt off the window frame or vacuum it with a handheld vacuum cleaner or the dusting attachment of your machine. This stops the dirt from turning into a muddy mess once it mixes with the cleaner. If the window screen looks particularly dirty, take it out and wash it with hot, soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse it and let it dry before putting it back.
For a quick dusting of shades and blinds, we recommend wiping both sides with a microfibre duster, or opening the slats and wiping each one with a damp cloth followed by a dry one.
Skimping on window cleaner
Do not hold back on the spray, especially if your windows are extremely dirty. You need plenty of cleaner to dissolve and lift the dirt so it can be wiped away completely. Skimp on it and you will see streaks.
Using an old cotton rag to dry windows
Some people like to dry glass with newspaper, but reusable microfibre cloths are a better choice.
Try Casabella microfibre glass cloths, which have a special honeycomb texture that removes water spots, streaks and dirt from mirrors and glass without scratching them.
If you would rather use paper towels, choose a brand that is up to the job. Flimsy paper towels can fall apart and leave lint behind.
Washing all the windows in one day
Windows only need washing once or twice a year, but the job is even easier if you split it up and do it room by room. When cleaning, wipe one side of the window horizontally and the other vertically. If any streaks appear, you will easily be able to tell whether they are on the outside or the inside.
