We are spending on houseplants

Growing houseplants is very popular. Whether it is geraniums or begonias, people are drawn to their colours and to the way they always brighten up any room or terrace. Searching for more exotic species is also very popular, and these come at a higher price. You may also have to wait several months for such a plant. Another advantage is that today any good garden centre stocks loads of houseplants. You just need to choose. Today we have picked our TOP 7, which you will love.

croton

1. Croton

It comes from the tropical forests of Asia and Oceania. In the wild it grows as a large shrub that reaches a height of 10 metres. If you get one, keep an eye on its leaves. They will tell you more than you think. If they are bright with distinct veining, the plant is getting enough light. If not, it needs more light. Also watch out for scorched leaves, which indicate direct sunlight, and it does not like that either. The plant grows upright, which can make it top-heavy. It helps to choose a large pot, so at least you will not have to repot the croton. Do not forget that it likes humidity.

Strelitzia and houseplants

2. Strelitzia

It is related to the banana plant. It is usually easier to grow than other tropical plants. It is very vigorous. One advantage is that it flowers at the end of winter or the beginning of spring. However, it can also flower at other times of the year when it is thriving. The plants grow with upright leaves that rise straight out of the soil. They also have no trunk. The large leaves grow up to 50 cm and can split when exposed to windy weather or when people brush against them in a busy hallway, so be careful. Strelitzia is highly toxic to pets, especially cats and dogs.

Lemon tree

3. Lemon tree

Who would not want fresh citrus fruit right at home? Growing lemons indoors is not difficult if you choose the right tree and meet its special requirements. Various varieties of this plant are available, and they grow to different heights. Naturally, choose one that suits the size of your room. Indoor lemon trees do best when their soil is evenly moist.

Caryota

4. Fishtail palm

It is an attractive plant to add to your home or office if you are looking for something with a unique look. This plant has interesting leaves that are dark green with ragged edges. The triangular leaves on a mature plant seem to split at the tips, which makes them look a little like a fish’s tail. This houseplant thrives in humidity and high temperatures, which is why it is a popular choice for hot locations, but growing it indoors is fairly easy and needs minimal care.

Kentia palm

5. Kentia palm

The Kentia palm, on the other hand, is wonderfully easy to grow. It will even forgive you if you neglect it now and then. It does very well in low light and tolerates lower temperatures. Thanks to its arching leaves, it brings an exotic tropical look to the interior. Avoid direct sunlight, as it scorches the leaves, and also protect it from draughts. It needs a warm room, ideally around 18 to 24 °C and at least 12 °C. It likes a humid environment, so do not place it close to a radiator.

Schefflera

6. Schefflera

Schefflera is a well-known houseplant with distinctive leaves. It is easy to look after, although, like the other tall houseplants on this list, it needs a large pot. Schefflera adapts to almost any indoor growing conditions, but it prefers medium light, moderate humidity and temperatures between 15 and 24 °C. Under artificial lighting they make good office plants, but their growth slows considerably if they are stuck in a dark corner. Ideally, place the schefflera near a window that gets bright but indirect light. In winter, keep the plants away from vents and outside doors, and protect them from children and pets.

Banana plant

7. Banana plant

The banana plant is another suitable houseplant. It grows very quickly and has green, flowing leaves with a beautiful blue haze and purplish-red spots. This tropical plant belongs to the Musaceae family, so it needs very humid air and a warm spot with plenty of light all year round. Older plants can even be placed in full sun. During a hot summer, do not be afraid to put it out in your beautiful garden. Place it in its pot somewhere near a rockery, for example, where it will shade smaller plants, or simply in a sunny, bright spot. However, protect it from harsh light around midday.

houseplants

Even when growing such giants, you will keep learning all the time. Your reward will be their growth and their fruit.
