Ideas for a narrow hallway
The entrance to every flat or house is usually a hall or a corridor. It is true that a narrow corridor can sometimes be hard to arrange. It takes up a significant and important space that nobody should simply ignore. For example, villas from the First Republic were built with a spacious hall, and it is a pity that the entrance area is quite often forgotten nowadays. There is plenty of inspiration, so we have picked the most interesting ideas for you that will make you want to do something with such a room.
Show off your creativity
Clearly, we will not fill a narrow corridor with furniture and make it even narrower. So do not be afraid to use the walls, which can be furnished along their entire length right up to the ceiling. Add separate hooks spread out along the wall, or choose shelves. As for depth, around 180–200 cm is generally recommended, so that you can reach it and it does not get in your way. A shoe cabinet is the simplest of all, as it is not very deep and so does not get in the way much. Use the top surface for keys, handbags and other items.
Pay attention to lighting
Decorate a narrow corridor with pendant lights, installed in two or three places in a row depending on the length of the corridor. Ideally, choose identical models, which will then create a decorative feature. Definitely avoid bulky chandeliers and large lamps that take up a lot of space. Spotlights or recessed ceiling lights are very suitable. If you do not have a high ceiling, ceiling-mounted lights installed crosswise will certainly come in handy.
How to make a corridor look bigger?
Use optical illusions. White will serve you very well, as it brightens such a room to the maximum and also goes with every shade of the colour palette. Cool colours visually recede into the distance and widen the space. Do not be afraid to use a large-format mirror, which also makes the space feel wider and is a practical helper when you are heading out. Try a mirror in a bold frame, which can replace pictures and become a practical part of your corridor. If you still do not have room for one, try acrylic mirror film that you stick onto a door.
Decorate a narrow corridor with attractive wallpaper. Choose plain wallpaper in light tones with a subtle pattern. Try to match the style and colours with the furniture and the floor. Wallpaper with vertical stripes is the best choice, as it visually raises the ceiling and gives the impression of more space. Washable wallpaper is very practical and can easily be cleaned with a damp cloth.
What about furniture?
How narrow is your corridor? Always try to work from the dimensions and keep in mind a limit of 80 cm for free passage. If your corridor has unusual dimensions, you will have no choice but to have furniture made to measure. What is more, such an investment will pay for itself very quickly.
Coat rack
Above all, choose a wall-mounted one, as it takes up the least space. A coat rack with a bench is very attractive and, above all, practical. If you have small children, fix it at a height of no more than 1 m so that they can reach it themselves.
Shoe cabinet
We have already mentioned it briefly: a shoe cabinet is a practical piece for a small space. Also, choose a tilt-out shoe cabinet with compartments. You can hide plenty of shoes in it, and its advantage is that you can place several of them side by side or one above the other. If you choose a simple wall-hung shoe rack, your shoes will also become an interesting decoration.
Pictures
If you have a narrow corridor, hanging a picture can be a tricky task. Above all, they should go well together. Print your favourite photos and put them in designer photo frames. However, never overdo the decorations in a corridor. Put your greatest artistic treasures in the living room or dining room.
A narrow corridor can be furnished tastefully and practically. All it takes is an idea and some good thinking.
