Industrial-style living room inspiration
Creating an industrial-style room is very easy. That said, you will need to prepare the room properly. Think carefully about where everything will go and how best to arrange it. Because, and this is the most important thing, your living room is mainly a room for receiving guests, so try to furnish it accordingly.
The origins and key elements of factory style
Do you like old factory halls? Then you will feel right at home with the industrial style. It dates back to the 1960s and 1970s in New York and London. This was mainly because rents were rising, and artists set up homes and studios in abandoned factories. From there it was only a small step for the style to reach Europe and the wider public.
So what are the key elements?
- Unfinished brick or concrete walls
- Concrete or solid wood flooring
- Exposed pipes and wiring
- Lighting
- Windows without net curtains
The best materials and colours
The basis is solid pieces made of unfinished or reclaimed wood. You can easily combine it with metal or leather. On the other hand, you can soften it with accessories and textiles, such as throws and soft rugs.
If you have a spacious living room, you can easily choose darker shades. However, since the industrial style tends to use muted colours, choose blue, grey, green, black or brown, for example. Use bolder tones mainly as an interesting contrast.
The best furniture
Lighting is often the key when choosing furniture. Don’t be afraid to go for an interesting industrial-style chandelier. It will become a striking feature. After all, you can even make one yourself, for example from various old pipes. All it takes is some skill and the right tools. Pendant lamps with dark metal shades or a track with spotlights will be a real highlight of your interior. Also try floor lamps, which work well on a tripod inspired by a camera stand, or simple spotlights on a metal arm.
Corner sofa
This is the ideal choice when furnishing an industrial-style living room. Add soft cushions in muted colours and simple shelves, and it will look really stylish.
Rug
Go for a short-pile rug, ideally in a light shade. If you have a hide available, it can also work very nicely on the floor.
Chest of drawers
Choose shelves and chests of drawers made of metal or reclaimed wood.
Table
Again, try solid wood or metal. And don’t be afraid to use recycled pallets. The table should also be fairly large, which will come in handy for New Year’s Eve parties.
Don’t forget graphite roller blinds or Venetian blinds on the windows. The industrial style is generally closely linked with red brick, so be sure to have it in your living room too. Don’t be afraid to combine brick with concrete, for example, to get the classic look of the good old factories of New York.
