How to build a stylish brick fire pit
It is one of the most romantic spots in the garden. A tasteful brick fire pit creates a magical and unforgettable atmosphere to enjoy with your family or friends. It is certainly not just about toasting sausages, which is a very tasty experience, but also about sitting together and having fun. If you already have experience building a stylish brick fireplace, the fire pit will be much quicker and easier for you.
Choose the location carefully
Those of you who have chosen a tried-and-tested spot are already ahead and will surely get to work soon. If you are on the other side, we have a few ideas for you. Everything has its conditions. Never build a brick fire pit right next to the house. This way you avoid an unwanted fire that could spread, and also smoke that could get into the living areas.
Also choose a spot that is not next to a barn, garage or clothes airer. Avoid sloping ground too. On a slope you can create a rockery, not a fire pit. Believe us, you will appreciate this advice when placing armchairs or chairs.
Position it so that it is not a danger to its surroundings.
If you have already chosen where to put it, you can start. Think about what diameter your fire pit should have, what material you will make it from and what you will use it for. A fire must also not be lit near open countryside or any flowering plants or trees. It is also not a suitable combination with conifers. If you are thinking of combining it with hydrangeas, leave this option out too.
If you have some old bricks, or even firebricks, take their dimensions into account. When building a fire pit from stones, you only need an idea of the outer size of the fire pit.
Building the fire pit
What do you need to build a fire pit like this?
You will certainly use
- a little sand
- a spade
- a rake
- a shovel
- bricks
A peg and string
They always come in handy. Especially if you are building a place where you will sit. Simply push in a peg with a piece of string as long as the diameter of your fire pit, and mark out a circle.
The foundations
First, dig out the whole circumference with a spade. Shake the soil out of the turf, as you will need it later. Start laying either bricks or flat stones on the bottom. Fill the gaps between the bricks or stones with some of the soil from the dug-out turf, or with sand.
Building the edge
Start laying bricks around the edge in a circle. This means the bricks will touch each other on the inner edge, while on the outer edge there will be a gap of about 5 cm between them. Once you have set the bricks or stones in place like this, fill the gaps with soil. And your fire pit is finally finished.
All that remains is to get some dry wood and celebrate your creation. After all, you have created a beautiful and pleasant place to relax with your own hands. You can also use it for cooking when you don’t know what to have for lunch.
