What is a room thermostat and how does it work?
Many of us dream of a home with economical and, above all, controlled heating. Saving money is always welcome, and when it comes to energy, the satisfaction and the effort are all the greater. Many people look up what photovoltaics is, which you surely already know. A room thermostat is also available on the market. Today we will look at what it is good for and what options you can choose from.
What is it used for?
Room thermostats compare the required room temperature with the currently measured one. Unsurprisingly, every thermostat also includes a temperature sensor that measures the room temperature, meaning the surrounding indoor temperature.
However, it contains much more than that. For example, function buttons or dials used to set the required temperature. The last component that every thermostat contains is a switching contact.
But do you know how a thermostat actually works? The general principle is as follows. The measured room temperature is compared with the required temperature you have set. This means that if the room temperature is lower than your setting, the thermostat’s output relay is closed and the connected device is running.
The difference between wired and wireless room thermostats
As we have already mentioned, a thermostat is a device that communicates with the heat source and keeps the indoor temperature stable at the level you set.
Among other things, thermostats are divided into
- wired
- wireless
Wireless thermostats have separate switching and user units. In addition, they communicate wirelessly, specifically over a radio frequency. The thermostat’s transmitter is the controller, which contains a temperature sensor and on which you set the required temperature. This transmitter regularly sends information about the current and required temperatures to the boiler’s switching unit.
Wireless room thermostats also come with a controller. The boiler’s switching unit is powered from the mains. You can buy a wireless thermostat in both digital and manual versions.
What kind of room thermostat?
Digital thermostats are smarter than mechanical ones. They also offer a range of options, such as:
- programming the room temperature over time
- setting different heating modes
- keeping the interior at a background temperature while you are away
Buy a room thermostat in a wireless version. That way it is not connected to the control unit by a cable. And what are the other advantages?
- simple and clear controls
- lower price.
A digital thermostat mainly needs two AA batteries.
Unlike mechanical thermostats, digital room thermostats need a power supply and contain an output relay. They are most often powered by AA batteries, or alternatively by mains voltage. What is more, the batteries can last up to two years. It depends on the type, though.
A room thermostat will certainly find its place in your home.
