What defines Greek-style interiors?
Who wouldn’t want a Mediterranean-style home? Let’s be honest, the most popular is Provence-style living, but the Greek style comes a close second. If you have always been drawn to a perfect combination of colours with plenty of natural materials, then good old antiquity could be just right for you.
Captivating beauty
Greece is a byword for beauty and for ancient yet wise legends that capture almost everyone’s imagination. After all, who doesn’t think of Zeus and Hera on mythical Olympus? Or brave Hercules and his labours, or the great battle for the beautiful Helen at Troy? Having a piece of Olympus at home is not such a big challenge. The interior should feature mainly earthy tones: the colour of clay, golden sand, oranges or even lavender. Remember that the Greek style is simple and light, so don’t be afraid to mix it with modern elements.
Choosing furniture
The foundation is white, both on the walls and on the furniture. The advantage is that it brings light into the room and makes it feel airy. Don’t be afraid to use stone, concrete or wood either. Furniture should be as minimalist as possible, so without ornaments. It should also be practical, so that every piece has a use in the interior. Forget about unnecessary items. Focus on quality furnishings and simple shapes. Wardrobes don’t necessarily have to be tall, as you can place a wicker basket on top of them.
Wicker or rattan chairs, armchairs and sofas are very popular in the Greek style. That is also why you should add plenty of cushions and throws. Naturally, in the colour of the sea. If you have seen the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you can easily take inspiration from columns too.
Decorations deserve the most attention
Unlike the English style, the Greek style tends to have fewer decorations. The priority is to keep everything in balance. So don’t regret that you bought a vase in Santorini or various amphorae painted with Greek gods or sea motifs. Now you can put them to use. Decorate the space with fresh or dried flowers in decorative pots. Add various pictures and textiles too. Natural fabric usually works best (linen or cotton is ideal). For the windows, choose simple curtains without decoration.
What about the floor?
If you are fond of rugs, go for individual rugs or small bedside mats. Place them, for example, by the bed, by the table or in the bathroom. And again, use blue or yellow so that your Greek style is truly first-class. With the floor in general, expect more detailed workmanship. Try Greek design in the form of marble or tiles, or mosaic. You can’t go wrong with a wooden floor either, but pay attention to the quality of the finish. If you choose a slightly rough floor covering, highlight the interior furnishings as well.
Unique ceilings
You have probably noticed that the Greek style is mainly about high arches with images of gods or heroes. You don’t need to have a ceiling like that, but decoration is definitely desirable. Choose, for example, a combination of wood and white. Decorate the edges of the walls with stucco or a border. As we have already mentioned, try columns too, for example made of plaster. If they are narrow and vertical, they will make a low ceiling look higher.
A distinctive taste
Greeks are a little different. Not only because they divorce very rarely, but also in their attractiveness and way of life. Women generally tend to have a fuller figure, yet they have more problems with their skin. This is due to the very hot climate and drinking coffee.
“Greece, the historic country par excellence, got caught in the gears of History
Besides that, Greek women love jewellery. They wear pearls, gemstones and beads in various shapes. They don’t forget to decorate their homes in the same way. So keep that in mind when you furnish your home in the Greek style.
