Inspiration for furnishing a balcony or terrace is important. A small balcony does not have to feel like an unattractive loggia where at most you dry your laundry. If you are inventive, you can easily create a spot where you can enjoy your coffee in the morning and unwind in the evening, for example with a good book. But how do you go about it?

a small balcony or terrace with flair

A garden that grows upwards

A small balcony means you need to think about every centimetre. Walls for plants, hanging shelves, hooks or folding chairs could come in handy, for example. A vertical garden like this can work wonders. You can plant it with your favourite succulents or with flowers that tolerate heat. It will also give you a splendid burst of colour. Do you grow herbs? Then nothing could be easier than looking after them on the balcony.

Make use of the railing too! Fit it with hanging planters, string lights or even a folding table, which comes in very handy when you sit outside.

Multifunctional furniture

Besides a small table, you can also make clever use of chairs with storage space. What is more, this is top-notch equipment you will always appreciate. Go for lighter pieces, meaning small armchairs, stools with slim legs and low seats.

One of the most striking changes is the flooring. You can choose wood, which suits almost any terrace, or pallets, an interactive rug or outdoor tiles, which can add both style and comfort. Indoor rugs with an outdoor finish have the same effect, and they also look very good and feel pleasant to the touch.

Even on a few square metres you can create space for seating, a small garden and relaxation. Various sofas, textures, rug colours, lights and plants all help. They also visually separate the different functional areas.

A parasol is a must during the day, while string lights, solar lanterns and LED candles are for the evening. If you choose a variety of light sources, they add charm and let you sit outside well into the night.

It depends on your taste

The popular architecture magazine ArchDigest recommends sticking to light! Try cushion seating, arrange furniture in different ways and opt for solar lighting, which will also last you a long time. AP News, on the other hand, suggests things like hanging planters, a vertical garden and lightweight textiles, all of which transform the space without any investment. Both views are fine, but if you do not feel good in such a place, they will not help you much. It comes down to your taste and your options.

If you pay attention to colour shades, fabrics and interior materials for the balcony, the space will feel like a natural extension of your home. Outdoor cushions, throws, curtains, hanging pictures and a suitably placed artificial mirror will enhance the sense of space, so you will feel relaxed and comfortable.

Creativity matters in a space like this

Remember, a small balcony does not have to be a limitation. On the contrary, its size encourages creativity and thoughtful design that combines function and beauty. All it takes is a few ideas, a couple of clever pieces of furniture, lighting and plants. Best of all, you will never waste a single centimetre of space, and at the same time you will gain a place where you can sit with a coffee in the morning and enjoy a lamp and a book in the evening. We wish you many pleasant moments in your cosy outdoor oasis!
