Tips for getting rid of lice at home
Over a lifetime, people catch all sorts of things. It might be flu or strep, but it could also be fleas or lice. Getting rid of them for good is often a tough nut to crack. It is certainly not as easy as getting rid of ants. Once you discover them, you have several options: either you rush to the pharmacy and use one of the chemical products, or you try some of our tips, which you can make yourself at home.
Getting to know the enemy
There are three types of lice. The most common is probably the head louse, which you can even catch on a train. It is also very fond of groups of children. It measures about 4 mm and, thanks to its three pairs of legs, it can grip a smooth strand of your hair firmly. The females lay eggs right on the scalp and attach them to the strands. At this stage of development you come across nits. They may look like dandruff, but you can tell the difference simply by washing your hair. After about a week the nits turn into larvae, which immediately start feeding on your blood. Well, isn’t that a charming parasite?!
Getting rid of lice at home
And now for our tips:
Vinegar
This is the most common ingredient we have at home. Your head will smell, but getting rid of the parasite certainly comes first. Massage it thoroughly into the hair and wrap the head in a plastic bag and a towel. The skin may turn red, but you will see that you get rid of them soon.
Hair straightener
Who would have thought a hair straightener could be so useful against lice? There is nothing to it: try straightening your own or your children’s hair and you will burn the lice in no time.
Tea tree oil
Another great remedy. Again, you just need to gently massage it into the hair and the problem is solved.
Plum brandy
Our grandmothers always used to say that plum brandy is the best cure for all kinds of vermin. And they were right. Even if it breaks your heart, you will see that your unwanted tenants will definitely not like this tincture. Just be careful that all of it does not make your head spin.
Special lice comb
Get a comb from the pharmacy that is made for lice. Simply apply any conditioner or hair balm to wet hair and comb through the head carefully. If you are really skilful, you will not need to use the comb again the following week. There is a wide range of these “nit combs” on the market. You can also get an electric comb, but the price is quite different, mainly higher.
Above all, keep them from coming back
Are you worried that lice will return to your family home? We have bad news: the chance is there. Lice are very resilient. Delousing also involves thorough cleaning and washing clothes, toys and, above all, bedding. Make sure the whole family goes through the delousing treatment. If the lice did not like it on you, they may try someone else in the family.
If you are scratching all over while reading this article, do not worry. You probably do not have lice, it is just your mind playing tricks on you.
