If you have a flat where you would like to combine a small living room with the kitchen, we have a few tips to help you reach your goal. Remember that this solution is not right for everyone.  Even so, it has many undeniable advantages, especially when you look at it from a practical point of view.

This solution is not right for everyone.

A multi-purpose room where the whole family spends time together is becoming more and more popular. But how is it best to approach this concept?

Glass doors separate the space.

1. Glass doors

It does no harm to plan an open space while also thinking ahead to less favourable times, for example by making it possible to separate the kitchen with sliding glass doors. The advantage is that you can close them when needed while keeping visual contact with the others in the living room. It could also help to divide the rooms with a narrow designer panel. It looks really stylish.

Try to separate the room using furniture.

2. Don’t be afraid to use furniture instead of partition walls

Don’t want to feel as if you are on a theatre stage while cooking? If your living room is a classic rectangle without half-walls, columns or curves, it helps to arrange the furniture cleverly so that you mark out the separate imaginary zones after all. Sometimes it also helps to divide the space with a loose rug, for example. Incidentally, a rug also works brilliantly to define a dining zone.

Position the hob so that it is not visible at first glance.

3. Where not to put the hob

For a living room with a kitchen to look presentable, one important thing is needed: keeping it tidy. A central island is often used as a divider between the individual zones. Although it is practical, think carefully about where to put it. You need to bear in mind that the island will also be visible from the living room. And the sight of an island permanently covered in pots would hardly be pleasant from a place meant mainly for relaxing. Of course, a hob looks nice when it is empty and clean, but how often does that happen in a family of several people?

Choose an interesting colour scheme too, especially in white or grey.

4. A minimalist living room with a kitchen

A minimalist style adds airiness and a sense of freedom. If you choose a suitable colour scheme, white, grey and black are an almost certain safe bet . On the other hand, simple furniture and a minimum of accessories can feel cold, but the advantage is easy maintenance. A minimalist style may not be the best solution for a large family, but it will save time for constantly busy people.

A minimalist style does not always have to feel cold.

5. The best lighting for a living room with a kitchen

Get spotlights for the kitchen, as they provide enough light while you work. Hang a pendant light above the dining table or bar, as it will visually divide the room. A floor lamp is best placed next to the sofa or above the coffee table, where it adds intimacy. Spotlights or track lighting can also be a good choice, complementing the whole space with one or two interesting light sources. However, when planning the lighting, stick to your style and the size of the room.

Spotlights make the space more pleasant.

6. Decorate your living room with a kitchen

The most important thing is to keep a balance, which is why decorations are just as important as the architecture or furniture itself. Try to make them match and give each zone its own uniqueness. For better efficiency and cosiness, buy small rugs, for example, which can cleverly divide the room. Works of art, in turn, give rooms soul and variety. Remember storage space too. And definitely don’t forget a large mirror, which makes the space look bigger.

Rugs are an ideal choice for dividing rooms.

7. Hang shelves instead of a bookcase

Are you a bookworm with so many books that you don’t know what to do with them? You can replace a typical large bookcase with shelves that you hang on the wall. This way you also fill otherwise unused space.

Get shelves instead of a bookcase.

Combining a small living room with a kitchen requires skill and a good eye. So don’t be afraid to use the services of an interior designer. They will save you not only money on unnecessary furniture but also time.
