Every gardener wants to enjoy a good harvest from their garden. You grow things for years, and then suddenly a visit from a pest or a spell of bad weather is all it takes to ruin your vegetables or your garden in full bloom. Leaving aside aphids, which you already know how to spray, and other beetles and flies, your garden also appeals to wild animals. What about deer? They have beautiful eyes, and as the famous Czech writer Ota Pavel said: “killing such an animal is the same as killing a person,” but honestly, a visit from one of these creatures in your garden is really unwelcome. So what can you do about it,

Effective protection? It does not exist, or it is problematic

If you can, fence your plot. You can even manage building a fence yourself. The drawback of such a fence can be various small gaps, because a deer can get through almost anything. Just because it finds a way in does not mean it will know how to get out again. And there is nothing worse than trying to chase out a confused deer.

Today there are more modern products on the market, such as scent-based animal repellents. With these you may have more success, but it depends on using them correctly.

And what about thinking about flowering plants? There are many flowers that will put your wild visitor off without killing it.

Which plants do wild animals dislike?

Floss flower

It is an annual, and if you are fond of blue, you will certainly like it. It grows 50 cm tall and is good for cutting. Its advantage is that you can also dry it. It suits both flower beds and balconies, but for a balcony choose a smaller cultivar.

Marigold

A completely undemanding plant. It likes full sun but also tolerates partial shade. You can grow it in a bed, in a window box or along various borders. It does best in well-drained soil rich in nutrients. Do not plant it in heavy clay soil, however, as waterlogging could cause its roots to rot.

Snapdragon

With this plant, pay attention to choosing the right soil. It needs well-drained soil rich in nutrients, and if it is in a sunny spot, you are on to a winner. Remember to water it regularly too, but do not overdo it.

Cinquefoil

Cinquefoils are not fussy about their location. They thrive in full sun but can also cope with shady corners of the garden. If you grow varieties with richly coloured flowers in shades of red, orange and pink, choose partial shade instead, because in direct sun the flower colours tend to fade.

Butterfly bushes

This is a real feast for the eyes. If you plant a butterfly bush in a sunny spot in your garden, get ready for regular visits from butterflies. They find its scent irresistible, and it also flowers beautifully. In summer it becomes not only a magnet for butterflies but also an attractive specimen plant in the garden.

Bee balm

A popular summer perennial known for its bright, intensely red flowers. They are shaggy and supported by several wine-red leaves.

Your garden may not compete for the most beautiful public garden in Prague, but it will be protected from unwanted visitors.
