How to build and anchor a pallet fence, a step-by-step guide

A newly built house is best finished off with a fence. Some people still have no fence around their house many years after moving in. It depends on what suits you. If you have decided to build a fence from pallets, even this can create a real sense of home and security in your garden. But how do you go about it?

What do you need to make it?

If you are at least a little handy and you like this type of fence, go for it. You only need a few things to make your fence from pallets.

Get ready:

• Pallets (ideally in good condition)

• A spade

• A sander, screws, drill bits, drills (an ordinary cordless drill driver will do)

• Support posts

• Concrete

• Wood stain and a brush

Method:

Sand all the pallets you need so that you will not be afraid to touch the fence in the future. Using a spade, dig holes for the support posts. Each hole should be 30 cm deep. The ideal distance between the holes should be less than the length of the fence.

Then set the posts in concrete. You can take a break from building for a few days, because the concrete needs to set properly. To assemble the fence, you will need a drill and screws. Once you have finished, it is the best time to treat the fence from pallets with wood stain.

The advantages of this fence are easy assembly and sturdiness.

Paint the finished pallet fence, but you can also decorate it however you like. Hanging decorations in the form of various containers with flowers look interesting.

If you skimp on the coating, you will drastically reduce the fence’s durability and it will only last a few years.

What is a Euro pallet?

An exchangeable pallet that is not returned to the sender but is loaded with more goods instead. Its dimensions, markings and load capacity are subject to strict rules. It may not look like it, but a Euro pallet can bear a load of 2,000 kg if the load rests evenly across the whole surface.

Where to get pallets?

You can buy such pallets new, get them from various warehouses, or browse online adverts. Try asking people you know too. Pallets can be had very cheaply. The downside is that in recent years the price of pallets has gone up, which may put you off. But do not give up. Pallets come in all sorts. Just make sure you do not get different sizes, as the fence from pallets could then look odd. Also try to keep the pallets from touching the soil so they do not rot.
